When the United States Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1878, the Philadelphia Mint was the first to strike the coins in a limited run before wider production. That original run included a distinct reverse detail. Known as the 8TF coin, these 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars are unique. These 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars have the limited-issue reverse with eight tail feathers present on the bald eagle in the heraldic eagle design on the reverse. Additionally, these coins come from the Redfield Hoard, a group of Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars discovered in a false wall in the home of millionaire LaVere Redfield following his death.
In the obverse design of the 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar is the profile portrait of Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap with the word “Liberty” inscribed on a band. Her hair is flowing behind her neck, and there are 13 stars representing the original colonies of the United States above her head.
For the reverse side of the 1878 8TF Morgan Dollar, the US Mint showcases a bald eagle with its wings spread wide, clutching arrows, and an olive branch in its talons. The denomination of the coin, “One Dollar,” is inscribed at the bottom, and the words “United States of America” encircle the design.
