In 1877, the United States Mint struck the vast majority of its $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles on the West Coast at the San Francisco Mint. In total, the coins were produced by the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, and San Francisco. However, Philadelphia and Carson City combined to strike just over 440,000 coins; nearly 1 million coins fewer than San Francisco.
For the obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, the mint features a portrait of Lady Liberty created by James B. Longacre. The 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint offers a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head and 13 stars around the portrait.
In the reverse design of 1877 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins, you will find Type III reverse design. The 1877 date in this series is notable as the debut issue of the Type III field. The Great Seal of the United States, created by Longacre, was changed with this release to showcase the face value as TWENTY DOLLARS, instead of its previous TWENTY D. inscription.
