In 1877, the United States Mint issued the $20 Liberty Double Eagle at three of its branch mint facilities. During the Civil War and Reconstruction Era, the majority of US Mint coin production occurred out west at the San Francisco Mint. The 1877 release was dominated by the San Francisco Mint with a total release of 1,735,000 coins. The Philadelphia Mint issued 397,650 coins and the Carson City Mint issued 42,565 coins.
All 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins offered here come in About Uncirculated 55 condition. Coins with this grade fall on the higher end of the AU scale and show extremely light-to-trace friction on the highest relief points, with the potential for medium or even near-full mint luster.
On the obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a bust of Lady Liberty. This portrait was designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre for proof strikes of the new Double Eagle. It offers a left-profile effigy of Liberty wearing a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars around the edge of the field.
The reverse side of 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins comes with the Type III design visuals. Originally, the Great Seal of the United States featured on the reverse of these coins without the national motto included and with a denomination noted as TWENTY D. The Type II design (1866-1876) added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, while 1877 brought the debut of the Type III design that further altered the reverse to feature DOLLARS instead of D. in the denomination.
