After nearly 60 years, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to redesign American coinage and thus, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was born. Interestingly, each coin had 3 different design variants during their years of issue.
The obverse side of the 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin showcases James B. Longacre’s Lady Liberty. In a Greco-Roman style, Liberty is seen donning a coronet crown in left-profile relief. Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars as well as the year of issue.
The reverse field of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin features James B. Longacre’s heraldic eagle. The eagle is seen holding a double ribbon while a shield is seen on its chest. This is a variation of the Great Seal of the United States.
