James B. Longacre created the designs featured on the Liberty Double Eagle Coins. He created the designs in 1849 as the United States Mint began striking proofs to prepare for the coin’s release into circulation. With his designs approved, the Gold Double Eagle debuted in circulation in 1850.
Through the first decade of production, the Double Eagle Coins were largely struck by the Philadelphia Mint, the US Mint’s primary branch facility. However, the outbreak of the US Civil War in 1861 necessitated a shift in the production of gold coins. The San Francisco Mint would serve as the primary facility for American gold coin production throughout the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era in the 1870s.
For the obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head with a ring of 13 stars around the portrait.
In the reverse design of 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, the US Mint features the Great Seal of the United States. The 1877 release of the coins was the first to feature the Type III reverse design. The Great Seal of the United States is featured on this side and now comes with a denomination engraved as TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D.
