The 1877 issue of Liberty Double Eagles meant the introduction of the Type III reverse design. From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint used the Type I reverse that had only the Great Seal and a ring of 13 stars. From 1866-1876, the US Mint used the Type II design with the addition of the national motto in the ring of 13 stars. In 1877, it debuted the Type III reverse with the modification of the face value from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
For the obverse of 1877-S Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you will find a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Designed for the mint in 1849 by James B. Longacre, this visual shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head with a ring of 13 stars around the portrait. The year of issue is at the bottom.
In the reverse design of the 1877-S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coin, the mint features the Type III design element. In addition to the altered engraving of the denomination, the design includes the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The design element includes a ring of 13 stars with the national motto.
