The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was the first of two design series for the $20 Gold Eagle from the United States Mint. Introduced in 1850 and struck through 1907, it enjoyed a longer lifespan in circulation in the United States than its successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Designed by James B. The 1877 release of Liberty Gold Double Eagles was notable for the introduction of the Type III reverse design element. The US Mint had previously altered the original (Type I) reverse in 1866 with the debut of Type II coins that added the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse. For the Type III debut in 1877, the US Mint altered the engraving of the denomination to read TWENTY DOLLARS instead of the previous TWENTY D.
The obverse of 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles comes with a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre, this left-profile relief shows Liberty with a coronet crown on her head and a ring of stars around the portrait. The date mark of the coin is featured at the bottom.
On the reverse of 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins is the Type III design element. In addition to the features noted above, the primary design here showcases the bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. The outstretched wings of the eagle are connected by sunrays reaching from wingtip to wingtip, while a ring of 13 stars is overhead.
