One of the more unique hoards of American coins is the Fairmont Collection. This hoard of Pre-33 US Gold Coins consists of US Eagle denominations struck in the 19th or early 20th century. These coins were initially used in overseas trade between the US and other nations, and later discovered in vaults in the 21st century. In the late-2010s, the Fairmont Collection coins were repatriated to the United States, with many displaying good condition for their age. Right now, 1877-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins in certified condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1877-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin offered here comes in Extremely Fine 45 condition. The XF scale occupies the 40-45 grade range on the Sheldon Numeric Scale. Coins in this condition exhibit light wear over the high relief points of the coin and sometimes show traces of the original mint luster.
The 1877 issue of Liberty Eagles was quite low for the era. Just 797 coins were produced by Philadelphia, while San Francisco struck 17,000 coins and Carson City issued an additional 3,332 coins. These Fairmont Collection specimens spent several decades in overseas vaults before being rediscovered in the 21st century and repatriated to the United States.
Obverse design elements on 1877-S $10 Liberty Eagle Coins include an effigy of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht, this visual element shows Liberty’s bust in left-profile relief with her hair in a neat bun and a coronet crown on her head. The field includes 13 stars in an arch above her head and a date mark beneath.
Reverse visuals on 1877-S $10 Liberty Gold Eagles include the heraldic eagle. Also designed by Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the US Mint, this image shows a front-facing eagle with the US national shield. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. These coins are Type II specimens and have a banner above the eagle with the national motto, a feature that was added to the coins in 1866.
