The $20 Liberty Head gold double eagle was introduced in 1849 following the California Gold Rush, which flooded the market with unprecedented quantities of gold and created a need for higher-denomination coinage. Chief Engraver James B. Longacre designed the coin featuring a coroneted head of Liberty. Today, 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In 1875, the United States Mint produced its Liberty Double Eagles at three branch mints. The coins were predominantly struck by the San Francisco Mint, with 1.23 million coins produced out west. In fact, of the 1,639,871 coins issued in 1875, San Francisco produced the vast majority. Philadelphia issued 295,720 coins, while Carson City produced 111,151 coins.
All 1875 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins available here come in Mint State 63 condition. MS63 coins have a slightly impaired mint luster with numerous small contact marks. A few heavy, scattered marks are also possible. Despite the flaws, the coins maintain a rather attractive eye appeal.
