The $20 Double Eagle was introduced as a direct result of the California Gold Rush and is the largest gold coin denomination the US ever issued. The Liberty Double Eagle was the first and longest-used design in the series, with the 1874 Liberty Double Eagle a noteworthy issue for collectors. Though it had a mintage of 366,780 coins, the 1874 is scarcer than other notable dates from the Type II design era, such as the 1865, 1866, and 1867 issues. Today, 1874 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in AU58 condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
While the Liberty Double Eagle was the longest-used design on the $20 gold coin, it was eventually overshadowed by the remarkable 1907 redesign from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. James B. Longacre, the 4th US Mint Chief Engraver, designed the Liberty Double Eagle, and it would eventually go through three design types. From Type I to Type III, all changes occurred on the reverse of the coin.
These 1874 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in AU58 condition, the highest AU grade available. This particular coin exhibits slight wear on its higher relief points, but retains much of its original mint luster.
On the obverse of the 1874 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, you will find a depiction of Lady Liberty. This design was similar to Christian Gobrecht’s design for the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle. It shows Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a coronet crown and long curls down the side of her face.
The reverse side of 1874 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagles features the Type II reverse design visuals. The Great Seal of the United States is at the center and shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief supporting the US national shield while clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Type II coins debuted in 1866 and featured the newly added national motto inside the circle of stars above the eagle’s head.
