The 3-Cent Nickel is one of the most unique forms of currency issued in American history. The coin was introduced as a replacement for precious metal-based coins and early paper notes that became scarce during the Civil War. This 1874 Liberty Head 3-Cent Nickel boasts an impressive eye appeal and brilliant sheen, as well as a Green CAC sticker authenticating its graded condition. Today, 1874 Liberty Head 3-Cent Nickels are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Liberty Head 3-Cent Nickels were introduced near the end of the Civil War in 1865 and produced through 1889. The coins were initially popular as other denominations, such as the silver 3-cent piece and copper-nickel cent, became scarce during the war. Though Congress initially attempted to replace these denominations with paper money, such as the three-cent note, these notes wore out quickly in circulation.
This 1874 Liberty Head 3-Cent Nickel is in Mint State 66+ condition, indicating it is among the highest quality coins at this grade level. MS66 coins have several small contact marks, with only a few in the primary fields. This particular coin has a stin texture with full mint luster, with a soft halo of gold toning around the edges of the field. Only three coins from this date have been graded higher by the NGC. The CAC sticker on the slab indicates that the Certified Acceptance Corporation authenticated the NGC’s MS66+ certification.
On the obverse of 1874 Liberty Head 3-Cent Nickels, you will find James B. Longacre’s portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts Liberty with a coronet crown and flowing hair. The nation of issue and date mark are included on this side.
The reverse side of the 1874 Liberty Head 3-Cent Nickel Coin comes with a simple design concept. The field features the Roman numeral III, signifying the face value of the coin. The Roman numeral is surrounded by a wreath. This design was also created by Longacre.
