The US Eagle Series started in 1794 at the United States Mint with the debut of the $10 Eagle. This was followed in 1795 by the $5 Half Eagle and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle. Throughout the early years, these coins largely featured the same obverse and reverse design combinations. This continued in these denominations until the 20^th century.

For the Double Eagle, its 1850 introduction resulted in a separate design being created at the time by the US Mint’s Chief Engraver, James B. Longacre. He drew inspiration from Christian Gobrecht’s existing design on the other US Eagle denominations, while putting his own little twist on the Liberty visual. He also created a unique reverse design element.

In the obverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, you will find a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This portrait of Liberty comes with a coronet crown on her head and a ring of 13 stars around the edge of the coin’s design field.

For the reverse field of 1873S Pre-33 Gold Double Eagles, Longacre created a unique design of the heraldic eagle. Known as the Great Seal of the United States, it features a front-facing eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace with the US national shield on its chest. The field includes a ring of 13 stars above the eagle with the national motto engraved within.

These 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are in Very Fine 35 condition. The PCGS assigns this grade to coins that showcase light overall wear with all general details on the coin still visible. As a Closed 3 specimen, these coins have tighter curls on the 3 in the 1873 date mark on the obverse.
