The Double Eagle was the largest denomination in the US Eagle Series from the United States Mint. Not only was it the largest denomination among the four gold coins in this collection, but it was also the largest coin denomination the US Mint ever released for circulation. Right now, 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins with a Closed 3 are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle comes with a Very Fine 20 grade from the PCGS. Coins with this grade exhibit medium to light wear overall, though all of the general details are still visible on the coin. As Closed 3 specimens, these coins have a tighter closure for the number 3 in the 1873 date mark on the obverse.
The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre. He was appointed as the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1844 by President John Tyler. He held this position until his death in 1869, making his tenure one of the longest in the Mint's history.
For the obverse design of 1873-S Liberty Gold Double Eagles, Longacre created a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Based on Christian Gobrecht’s bust on the other denominations of the US Eagle, this design shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars around the edge of the field.
In the reverse design of the 1873-S $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin, Longacre created an ornate version of the Great seal of the United States. This visual shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Above the eagle’s head, you’ll find the national motto inside a ring of 13 stars.
