Coin Highlights:
Lady Liberty is seen on the obverse side of the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin. In this design, Liberty is seen donning a coronet crown in left-profile relief. 13 stars frame this James B. Longacre design. Also featured is a closed 3 on the year of issue.
A heraldic eagle is on the reverse field of the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin. Also designed by Longacre, the eagle is seen clutching a double ribbon, arrows, and an olive branch. Identifying marks of the coin frames the image.
Each 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin will come encased in a slab from the PCGS. Each coin has been graded as AU55 by the Professional Coin Grading Service. These coins have slight wear on high points with minor friction in the design fields. Plenty of mint luster is also present.
Under the Mint Act of 1792, the eagle ($10) was the largest denomination for the United States coin. However, a double eagle, with a face value of $20, was authorized under the Coinage Act of 1849, due to the California Gold Rush. While these coins weren’t struck until 1850, two 1849 proof strikes do exist with one being at the Smithsonian Institution.
