In 1850, the United States Mint introduced the Gold Double Eagle denomination. This coin was the fourth denomination added to a series that already included Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle denominations. Generally speaking, these denominations shared designs in the 19th century, but the Double Eagle was an exception. Today, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles with an Open 3 are available at JM Bullion.

The US Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle were among the first denominations issued by the US Mint in 1794 and 1795. These coins were $10, $5, and $2.50 denominations, respectively. The Double Eagle, a $20 coin, was introduced in 1850 and remains the largest denomination of coinage ever issued into circulation by the US Mint.
All 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles available here come in AU50 condition. Coins with this grade have only extremely light or trace signs of friction present on the highest points of relief on the coin. Many of these coins feature medium or even full, original mint luster. These so-called Open 3 coins have a slightly larger opening where the points of the number 3 come together in the 1873 date mark.
On the obverse of 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagles is a portrait of Lady Liberty created by James B. Longacre. This portrait is inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s existing design of the time from the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle. It is a left-profile bust that includes a coronet crown on Liberty’s head with a ring of 13 stars around the portrait.
The reverse side of the 1873 Pre-33 Gold Double Eagle Coin comes with an ornate version of the heraldic eagle. Known as the Great Seal of the United States, it features a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in another. The national motto is set within a ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head.
