The design remained the same from 1849 to 1866. For the decade that followed the phrase “In God We Trust” was added above the eagle. From 1877 to 1907, the denomination was spelled out at the bottom.
The obverse side of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin showcases Lady Liberty. This depiction shows her in left-profile relief wearing a coronet crown. James B. Longacre created this design. 13 stars frame Lady Liberty.
The reverse side of the 1873 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin features the heraldic eagle design of James B. Longacre. The bald eagle is in front-facing relief clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. 13 stars are also seen over the head of the eagle.
Each 1873 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is encapsulated in a protective plastic slab, courtesy of the PCGS. These coins have been given a grade of AU53 which indicates slight flatness and loss of some original luster.
