The Liberty Double Eagle was the original design featured on the $20 Double Eagle coin. From its debut in 1850 until 1907, the Liberty Double Eagle design from James B. Longacre graced the obverse and reverse of the coins. Today, 1872-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition from the Fairmont Collection are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Fairmont Collection refers to a hoard of Pre-33 US Gold Coins previously used in international commerce between the United States and overseas trade partners. Many of the coins were roughly handled and poorly stored in foreign banks for decades, with only a few being repatriated to the United States in AU and Mint State conditions.
This 1872-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is available in About Uncirculated 53 condition. Generally speaking, coins with this grade have extremely light or trace friction on the highest relief points. This particular coin has a vivid, golden-apricot color with a bold, even sharp, strike.
On the obverse of the 1872-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle is Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust of Liberty features a coronet crown on her head with a ring of 13 stars around the design field. Similar to Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 design for the $10 Eagle, this portrait of Liberty was created in 1849 by James B. Longacre.
The reverse side of 1872-S $20 Gold Double Eagles comes with a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. This image shows the eagle in front-facing relief supporting a large US national shield as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
