The 1868-S Liberty Half Eagle emerged during the challenging Reconstruction Era following the Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild its economy and reintegrate the defeated Confederate states. With a mintage of 52,000 pieces, this San Francisco issue reflected the continued importance of Western gold production to the recovering national economy. Today, 1868-S Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The year 1868 saw significant deflation and economic uncertainty as the country debated monetary policy, particularly the contentious issue of whether to maintain the wartime greenback currency or return to a strict gold standard. The San Francisco Mint, established in 1854, played a crucial role in converting California and Nevada gold into coinage, providing much-needed hard currency during this period of financial instability and helping to stabilize the post-war monetary system.
This 1868-S Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin is in AU55 condition and boasts warm, even gold surfaces with soft luster present. Both sides of the coin have even, well-preserved fields with crisp engravings of the legends and color that is both uniform and attractive. The coin also features a strong strike with satin sheens in the background.
On the obverse of the 1868-S Pre-33 Liberty Half Eagle Coin, the Charlotte Mint used Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design. This left-facing portrait shows Lady Liberty wearing a coronet crown, with her hair pulled back from her face. Thirteen stars encircle the outer edge of the design field, symbolizing the original states. The date, 1851, is displayed at the bottom of the obverse.
The reverse of the 1868-S $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle features the classic heraldic eagle design. This depiction presents a bald eagle in forward-facing relief with the national shield of the United States placed across its chest. In its talons, the eagle holds arrows representing defense and an olive branch representing peace. This Type II reverse specimen includes the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
