During the 1860s, the San Francisco Mint took on a critical role in the production of American gold coins. Prior to the start of the US Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint and New Orleans Mint played big roles in producing Liberty Double Eagle gold coins, as well as other gold denominations. Throughout the Civil War and Reconstruction, the bulk of production was shifted west to the San Francisco Mint. Now, 1867-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1867-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin comes with a portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre, this left-profile relief shows the head of Liberty with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars around the bust. The date mark is featured at the bottom of the coin.
On the reverse side of 1867-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagles is a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. This image shows a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. There is a ring of 13 stars over the head of the eagle. These 1867 coins are Type II specimens, referring to the second iteration of the reverse design.
From 1850-1866, the US Mint issued Liberty Double Eagles without the national motto on the reverse. In late 1866, the US Mint introduced the national motto of IN GOD WE TRUST within the ring of 13 stars above the head of the eagle. Type II specimens were issued from 1866 to 1876, with the Type III iteration introduced at that point and struck through 1907. Type III coins maintained the same addition of Type II coins, but with the alteration of the denomination from Twenty D to Twenty Dollars.
These 1867-S Pre-33 $R20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are in AU55 condition. Coins with this numeric grade fall near the high end of the About Uncirculated range. You’ll notice medium or near-full luster with extremely light or even just trace signs of friction at the highest points.
