This 1865 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin was struck during the American Civil War and salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Republic. The coin has quite an attractive eye appeal with average mint luster and several small contact marks, as well as a few scattered hairlines.
On the obverse of 1865 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you’ll find a left-profile bust of Liberty. Her effigy is depicted with a coronet crown. This design was refined for the Double Eagle in 1849 by James B. Longacre and is inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 depiction of Liberty.
The reverse of the 1865 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle comes with an image of the Great Seal of the United States. Inspired by the heraldic eagle, this emblem shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Type I coins lack the national motto (IN GOD WE TRUST) and have a denomination engraving of TWENTY D.
