In 1862, the U.S. Treasury issued the first of its legal tender notes into circulation. Several denominations were printed, including the $1 edition featuring Salmon Chase. JM Bullion is pleased to offer these notes to you now in certified condition. The Paper Money Guaranty assigned these notes a grade of Fine 12 and also included a special clear currency sleeve for storage and protection. Today, 1862 $1 Legal Tender Notes are available to you online from JM Bullion in Fine condition.
Note Highlights:
Unlike Federal Reserve notes, legal tender notes were issued interest-free by the U.S. government. Otherwise, they could (and still can) be used as legal tender just like a standard Federal Reserve note. The notes were printed from 1862 until 1928 in the classic large format, and then from 1928 until 1971 in the standard size. Civil War historians are especially fond of these notes given that they were originally printed to help alleviate the Union’s wartime debts.
A portrait of Salmon Chase is found on the obverse of 1862 Legal Tender Notes. Chase was the sixth chief judge of the Supreme Court and as the twenty-fifth Secretary of the Treasury. The denomination is listed several times on the obverse along with other decorative elements. The Treasury seal appears in red just below the portrait of Chase. There is also a handsome decorative pattern extending across the top and bottom borders of the note.
The denomination and obligation information are found on the reverse of these Legal Tender Notes. The denomination is presented alphabetically and numerically on either side of the note. The corners however are left blank. A single ring made of discs bearing the number 1 is extended around the center of the note. Inside it, there are lines of text describing the note’s obligation as legal tender.
These $1 Legal Tender Notes can be purchased at the click of a mouse and delivered straight to your door. JM Bullion fully insures your order while in transit and delivers using nondescript packaging. Upon arrival, you will find your note housed in an archival-quality currency sleeve bearing the grade of Fine 12. Certified by the Paper Money Guaranty, these notes will have rounded corners, margin splits, and other flaws. However, the note will be whole and the paper solid.
