The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was the first of two design series for America’s $20 gold coin. Introduced in 1850, the Liberty Double Eagle was struck through 1907 and had a far longer life than its popular successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The particular $20 Liberty Double Eagles available here were first struck by the US Mint on the eve of the US Civil War in 1861. The 1861 release of $20 Liberty Double Eagles was an important one in the history of the series. It marked a turning point for the focus of production as the outbreak of the US Civil War during 1861 would change the dynamics of gold coin production in the United States. The most obvious changes came in the form of locational production. From 1862-1865, the San Francisco Mint would become the hub of production, with the Philadelphia Mint producing far fewer coins and the New Orleans Mint no longer producing any as it had fallen under Confederate control.
All 1861-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in AU58 condition in this listing. Coins in this condition fall at the very top of the About Uncirculated range and can easily be mistaken at times for a BU coin. AU58 coins have on trace signs of friction on the highest points and may feature full mint luster.
On the obverse of 1861-S Liberty Gold Double Eagles, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust follows the tradition of Greco-Roman designs used on American coins of the 19th century. Liberty wears a coronet crown on her head and is surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.
The reverse side of the 1861-S $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin comes with a depiction of the Great Seal of the United States. This ornate take on the heraldic eagle comes with a front-facing bald eagle supporting the US national shield. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
