Coin Highlights:
The $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin was a direct product of the California Gold Rush. When the US Eagle denomination was introduced in 1795, it was originally available only as the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle.
Following the influx of gold to the Treasury during and after the California Gold Rush, the $20 Gold Double Eagle was introduced. The coin features a design modified from Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 Liberty Head design by his predecessor, James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
The obverse of 1861 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins comes with a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. This portrait includes a coronet crown on her head with curls in her hair. There are 13 stars around the design field and a date mark of 1861 at the bottom.
On the reverse of 1861 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins, you will find the Great Seal of the United States. This modified version of the heraldic eagle includes a front-facing bald eagle supporting an ornate US national shield. Rays of sunlight connect the tips of its outstretched wings and the eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
These 1861 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to you in Mint State 61 condition. Coins with this grade showcase diminished mint luster, clusters of large and small contact marks, and hairlines that are noticeable to the naked eye.
