The $20 Gold Double Eagle debuted in 1850 with a design from James B. Longacre, the 5th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. This 1858 $20 Liberty Double Eagle comes from the first decade of production for the series and retains crisp outlines around Liberty’s portrait on the obverse, as well as clear definition on the eagle’s feathers and a robust rim on the reverse. Today, the 1858 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin in AU55 condition is available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Liberty Gold Double Eagles represent the first design series in the $20 Double Eagle denomination. The largest circulation gold coin ever issued by the United States Mint, the Double Eagle was introduced in the aftermath of the California Gold Rush as the federal government found itself in possession of a wealth of gold bullion. The $20 Double Eagle was largely used in international commerce and bank-to-bank transactions.
This 1858 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is in AU55 condition, with light or trace wear on its higher relief points and strong remaining mint luster. This particular coin has hints of satin-like luster in the fields, with deeper tones of gold in sunken or otherwise protected areas of the coin’s surface. With a relatively low original mintage, high-grade survivors from the 1858 release are considered somewhat scarce.
On the obverse of 1858 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins, you’ll find a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Similar to Christian Gobrecht’s effigy of Liberty on the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle, this image of Liberty with a coronet crown was created for the Double Eagle by James B. Longacre.
The reverse of 1858 $20 Liberty Double Eagles comes with an image of the Great Seal of the United States. This ornate design consists of a bald eagle supporting the US national shield while clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. As a Type I reverse specimen, this coin lacks the national motto and uses a face value engraving of TWENTY D.
