In 1856, America was still reveling in the impact of the California Gold Rush. Hundreds of thousands of Americans and other immigrants were moving West in hopes of a fresh start. 1856 also marked just the third time the new San Francisco Mint was contributing to the production of national currency. One notable feature of the 1858 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle release was the volume of coins struck by the San Francisco Mint. The new branch mint was in its third year issuing Double Eagles and it produced an astounding 1,189,750 coins. This compared to just over 320,000 at Philadelphia and only 2,250 at New Orleans.
All of these 1856-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to purchase in About Uncirculated 58 condition. The highest numeric value on AU coins, an AU58 has only trace signs of friction at the highest relief points and medium or near-full mint luster.
On the obverse of the 1856 Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a left-profile bust of Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre and inspired by Christian Gobrecht’s 1838 design, this design from 1849 shows Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a coronet crown.
The reverse side of 1856-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design offers a more ornate version of the seal based on the Great Seal of the United States. It includes rays of light extending from wingtip to wingtip above the eagle’s head with a larger US national shield on its chest.
As Fairmont Collection coins, these $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles possess a unique history. Used in international commerce between the United States and other foreign nations, these particular coins would end up sitting in foreign bank vaults for decades before being discovered and repatriated to the US in the late 2010s.
