The $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin was designed by James B. Longacre, 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, in 1854. The original design featured a smaller reverse field and tighter wreath in its design, making it the lone date in the series with the so-called “small dollars” design concept.
All of these 1854 Pre-33 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coins are available to you in Mint State 61 condition. The coins have diminished mint luster with a combination of several small contact marks, a few heavier marks, noticeable hairlines, and scuff marks possible within the design field.
On the obverse of 1854 Pre-33 Indian Princess Gold Coins, you will find the left-profile bust of Liberty. In this design, Longacre depicts Liberty with an ornate, feathered headdress on her head. This is one of the first appearances of indigenous design themes on American coinage.
The reverse side of 1854 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coins comes with a depiction of a wreath surrounding the date and face value of the coin. This “small dollar” design has a tighter enclosure of the wreath at the top of the field, with the wreath made of wheat, corn, tobacco, and cotton.
