The Gold Double Eagle coin is America’s largest denomination of gold coin ever issued. Part of the broader Gold Eagle circulation coinage that launched in 1795, the Gold Double Eagle came into being as a result of an influx of gold into the Treasury following the California Gold Rush in 1849. The 1852 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin is currently available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion with NGC certifications.
Coin Highlights:
Gold Double Eagle coins were authorized by the Coinage Act of 1849. The first Gold Double Eagles were struck in 1849 as proofs only. Regular production for circulation began in 1850, making these 1852 specimens coins from the third year of availability. At this point in US history, gold coins featured a flat 90% gold content.
The design of Gold Eagle coins, in general, had several variations, but given the 1849 debut of the Gold Double Eagle, there are only two main design types with six subtypes available in all, these 1852 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle coins feature the first design and subtype from James B. Longacre, the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
On the obverse of 1852 Liberty Gold Double Eagle coins is a left-profile bust of Liberty. She wears a coronet on her head with the word “Liberty” inscribed on it. Surrounding her figure are 13 stars with the date mark of “1852” featured below her portrait.
The reverse of the 1852 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle coin has the first subtype design available in the collection. The Great Seal of the United States features on this side, with “United States of American” engraved above and a face value as “twenty D” engraved below. There is no national motto on these coins.
These 1852 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available with an XF40 certification from the NGC. XF stands for Extra Fine and the 40 indicates the coins fall in this range with complete detail and minor wear and tear, but those flaws are found on most of the high points compared to other XF coins with a higher numeric grade.
