The Liberty Head Double Eagle design was the longest-running image on the US Mint’s $20 Double Eagle Coin. Introduced in 1850, it was struck annually by the US Mint annually until 1907 when it was replaced by the second and final design, the Saint-Gaudens Liberty Double Eagle. Now, 1850-O $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available in certified condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The United States introduced the $20 Double Eagle following the California Gold Rush. The coin joined the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle as the fourth denomination of the US Eagle Series. The Liberty Double Eagle debuted in 1850 and was produced by the Philadelphia Mint and the New Orleans Mint, with the latter coins bearing an O mint mark.
The New Orleans Mint was established in 1838 and began producing coins in 1838. It operated until 1861, when it was seized by Confederate forces during the Civil War. It reopened in 1879 and continued minting coins until 1909, when it ceased operations permanently.
Obverse design elements on these 1850-O $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins include a bust of Lady Liberty. Similar to the design Christian Gobrecht created for the other denominations, this design from James B. Longacre features Liberty’s head in left-profile relief with a coronet crown atop her head and a ring of 13 stars around the portrait.
Reverse visuals on 1850-O Liberty Gold Double Eagles include the Great Seal of the United States. Also designed by Longacre, this image shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief with the US national shield. The eagle’s talons clutch the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
These 1850-O $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins are available to you in VF20 condition. Coins with this grade showcase medium to light wear overall on the designs and fields. Additionally, the general designs on the coin are still visible.
