Coin Highlights:
The Dahlonega Mint, established in 1838 in the mountains of northern Georgia following America’s first major gold rush, was one of only three branch mints authorized to produce gold coins in the antebellum South. Operating until 1861 when it was seized by Confederate forces at the outbreak of the Civil War, the mint struck gold coins in denominations of $1, $2.50, $3, and $5, all bearing the distinctive “D” mint mark that makes them highly prized by collectors today.
This 1849-D Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coin comes in Mint State 61 condition. The coin shows a bright, rich yellow-gold surface with satin-like luster. The designs are crisply refined, while the coin offers uniform color to the gold and balanced relief across the design elements.
For the obverse of 1849-D $1 Liberty Coins, you’ll find James B. Longacre’s Type I design of Liberty. This design featured on the obverse of $1 US Gold Coins from 1849 to 1854 and shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head and 13 stars around the design field.
In the reverse design of the 1849-D Pre-33 Liberty Gold Coin, you will find the Type I reverse design by Peter Filatreu Cross. This image was likewise used through 1854, and shows the denomination and date of the coin inside a loose wreath, with the nation of issue engraved around the outside of the wreath.
