Coin Highlights:
Coins in the Fairmont Collection with the “C” mint mark indicate that they were originally produced at the Charlotte Mint. The Charlotte Mint was among the first group of US Mint branches to open along with the Dahlonega Mint and the New Orleans Mint in 1838. Both the Charlotte Mint and the Dahlonega Mint were open from 1838-1861. Both mints produced only gold coins as they were founded to facilitate the conversion of local gold deposits into coinage.
The obverse of the 1847-C Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin features the depiction of Lady Liberty. This left-profile portrait of Liberty is shown surrounded by 13 stars while wearing a coronet crown.
The reverse side of the 1847-C $5 Liberty Half Eagle Coin showcases the heraldic eagle design of Christian Gobrecht. This front-facing relief bald eagle is shown clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The national shield is also displayed on its chest.
Each 1847-C $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin will arrive in a PCGS protective plastic slab. These coins have been given an XF40 grade from the prestigious Professional Coin Grading Service. XF40 coins showcase all design elements, but high points are now worn flat while little to no luster remains.
