The 1845 Liberty Gold Half Eagle is the $5 (USD) denomination in the broader US Eagle Series. These coins mark the seventh release of the Liberty Head design. The obverse and reverse of the Liberty Gold Eagle Series was created in 1838 by Christian Gobrecht.
The 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Gobrecht created countless coin designs for the United States Mint during his career. This Liberty Head design from 1838 was one of his last as he would go on to serve as the 3rd Chief Engraver from 1840 until his death in 1844.
Obverse design elements on these 1845 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins include a portrait of Liberty in left-profile relief. The design shows Liberty with curls of hair hanging down the side of her head, the bulk of her hair pinned up at the back of her head, and a coronet crown on top of her head. The field includes a ring of 13 stars with the date mark of 1845 at the bottom.
Reverse visuals on 1845 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins include a depiction of the American bald eagle. This design is known as the heraldic eagle and captures the national bird in front-facing relief supporting the US national shield.
Many of the Fairmont Collection coins were discovered in European banks in the 2010s and later repatriated to the United States. There were only a few thousand coins discovered between the Eagle and Half Eagle denominations, and only a few hundred had Mint State conditions.
These 1845 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are in AU50 condition. Almost Uncirculated 50, or About Uncirculated 50, coins have only trace or extremely light friction on the highest points of the coin.
