The Liberty Gold Half Eagle was available from the United States Mint between 1839 and 1908. The popular design was created by Christian Gobrecht and was the longest-running image in the series. 1844-O $5 Liberty Half Eagles in the Fairmont Collection are steeped in history as pieces that are more than 150 years old, were issued by a now-defunct branch mint, and survived for decades in international banks before being repatriated to the US starting in the late 2010s. Now, 1844-O Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available to you in certified condition online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
In 1835, Congress authorized an expansion of the United States Mint that would see three branches added. These included two mints for gold-only production, Charlotte and Dahlonega, and gold and silver coining at the New Orleans Mint.
By the 1840s, all three mints were striking US Eagle Gold denominations alongside the Philadelphia Mint. In 1844, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans all issued $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles, with New Orleans striking the most at 364,600 coins in total.
The obverse of the 1844-O Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin features the left-profile bust of Liberty. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it depicts Liberty wearing a coronet crown on her head. On the reverse of 1844-O $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles, the US Mint features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design lacks the national motto above the head of the bird, a feature not added to the coins until after 1866.
The term Fairmont Collection refers to a group of US Gold Eagles that were used in international commerce between the United States and international trade partners. Many of these coins sat for decades in foreign banks before being repatriated to the US starting in the late 2010s.
These 1844-O Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coins are available to purchase in XF45 condition. Coins with this grade are the highest on the XF scale with light wear only on the highest points, as well as the possibility of some traces of mint luster.
