Coin Highlights:
The Liberty Half Eagle Coin was redesigned in 1839 by the United States Mint, with 4th Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht developing an iconic portrait of Lady Liberty that would be used on the Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle denominations starting in 1838/1839. This classic design was used on the coins through 1907/1908, making it one of the longest-used images in the history of American coinage.
This 1840 Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin is in AU55 condition. AU55 specimens are among the highest-graded AU coins. Light friction is found only on the highest points of the coin, with a lustrous field and devices that showcase a satin-like glow. These coins are 90% gold specimens with a 10% balance of copper.
On the obverse of 1840 Pre-33 Liberty Half Eagle Coins, you will find Gobrecht’s portrait of Lady Liberty. The image shows Liberty with a coronet crown and long curls in her hair. There are 13 stars around her portrait with the date at the bottom.
The reverse side of 1840 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles comes with an image of the heraldic eagle. This original reverse design shows only the bald eagle, the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Later issues in the series would include a banner with the national motto.
