The Capped Bust design succeeded the Draped Bust series and was used on U.S. silver coins from 1807 to 1839, representing a significant evolution in American numismatic art. Coin Highlights:
The Capped Bust design appeared on half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and briefly on half eagles and eagles in gold. Reich’s work represented a more robust, three-dimensional approach to coin design compared to the flatter appearance of earlier issues. The Capped Bust series underwent several modifications during its production run, including changes to the number and arrangement of stars on the obverse and adjustments to the eagle on the reverse.
All 1829 Capped Bust Dimes are available in About Uncirculated 58 coins. AU58 coins have little wear and are easily mistaken at times for uncirculated specimens. AU58 coins have only trace signs of friction on the highest points of the coin, with medium or even near-full mint luster present.
Obverse design elements on 1829 Capped Bust Dime Coins include Reich’s famous design of Liberty, as engraved by Willian Kneass. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief wearing what is often known as the Phrygian cap, or Liberty cap, with her hair tied in curls.
Reverse visuals on 1829 Capped Bust Dimes include the heraldic eagle. The image shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief as it looks to its right (coin left). The eagle is supporting the US national shield and clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
