One of the premier American refiners of precious metals was Engelhard. The New Jersey-based refiner focused on smelting and refining platinum, and is perhaps best known for developing the catalytic converter for automobile engines. It was also well-known for its silver and gold bullion bars. Although it is no longer in the precious metals business, you can still find Engelhard products on the market. Right now, 10 oz Engelhard Poured Silver Bars are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

Each of the 10 oz Engelhard Poured Silver Bars in this product listing is available to you with a protective plastic sleeve at shipping. These bars are considered “wide” bars from the Engelhard lineup of silver bullion products, indicating not that the products have unusual width, but rather point to the inscription alignment. The bars have inscriptions on the obverse that are stamped in horizontally across the design surface rather than vertically down the design field.
These 10 oz Engelhard Poured Silver Bars are a unique option to exercise when buying silver. As of 2006, Engelhard is no longer operating in the precious metals industry. It was purchased for $5 billion by the German chemical manufacturing firm BASF and no new Engelhard gold or silver bullion products are produced as a result. Though not as rare as other types of silver bars, these particular poured silver bars were not the most common products from Engelhard.
On the obverse side of the 10 oz Engelhard Poured Silver Bar are the only inscriptions you’ll find. Along the top of the design field are inscriptions of the purity, metal content, and weight of the product. In the center of the design field is the elongated logo for Engelhard that includes the corporation name inside of a stretched hexagon. Below that, you’ll find an individual serial number. Most 10 oz Poured Silver Bars from Engelhard feature serial numbers with a one-letter, six-number code.
Poured silver bars such as these from Engelhard are produced by first melting silver and then pouring it directly into a prefabricated mold. This mold is shaped to ensure that it holds a specific weight of silver.
Engelhard was formerly a Fortune 500 company in America and headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey. The company was founded in 1902 by Charles W. Engelhard and one year later he founded the American Platinum Works, the company’s first foray into precious metals.
