The Liberty Gold Eagle was first released in 1838 as the second of the $10 Gold Eagle Coins. It continued to enjoy circulation for nearly seven decades until 1907. As one of the few pieces of currency to be minted prior to the 1933 cessation of gold coinage, the Liberty Gold Eagle boasts an exceptional gold purity of 90.0% that makes it quite valuable both in terms of financial merit and historical significance. Further enhancing the value of this particular piece is its AU (Almost Uncirculated) condition, which is rather rare for a coin of its time period.
Coin Highlights:
The design of the $10 Liberty Gold Eagle pays tribute to two of this nation’s most beloved icons: Lady Liberty and the bald eagle. Displayed on the coin’s obverse is Christian Gobrecht’s rendition of Lady Liberty. She is depicted in profile, wearing an inscribed crown on top of her elaborately styled curls. Viewers will note that Gobrecht’s portrait includes many of the aesthetics common to Ancient Greco-Roman art such as the shape of Lady Liberty’s features and the arrangement of her hair. Also incorporated into the front artwork is a border of thirteen stars, accompanied by the coin’s mintage date.
The reverse side of the coin has been embossed with the Heraldic Eagle, which depicts the national bird as it carries a shield, an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Printed along the edge of the coin are its denomination and country of origin. Customers should note that Liberty Gold Eagle Coins minted after 1866 feature the additional design element of an unfurling scroll that reads, “In God We Trust.” This will appear directly above the eagle. Unfortunately, JM Bullion cannot disclose in advance whether your order will include this particular detail.
