One of the most historic coin designs from the Austro-Hungarian Empire was the 10 Francs coin. The coin was issued by the Austrian Mint on behalf of the empire from 1870 to 1892, and took on new life in the 20th century as a gold bullion release from the modern Austrian Mint as an 1892-dated restrike. These 10 Francs-4 Florin Austrian Gold Coins are a unique release from the Austro-Hungarian Empire that had a dual face value. The Austro-Hungarian Empire began issuing the coins in 1870 after joining the Latin Monetary Union on the European Continent. This 19th-century predecessor to the European Union established a common standard for gold currency based on the Franc as the denomination.
From 1870 to 1892, the Austrian Mint issued two of these dual-face-value coins to be a member of the LMU. The 4 Florin coin was equated with the popular 10 Francs gold coin, while the 8 Florin coin was equated with the 20 Francs gold coin. After issuing the coins from 1879 to 1892, the Austrian Mint began issuing restrike versions of the coin in the 1970s as a gold bullion specimen. Each one has the original designs from the 19th-century coins with a single date mark of 1892 on all restrikes.
Emperor Franz Joseph I is featured on the obverse side of 10 Francs-4 Florin Austrian Gold Coins. The portrait shows only the head of Franz Joseph I wearing a Roman-era wreath crown on his head. There is a beaded border to the design with inscriptions in Latin that identify the leader and his status as the “Emperor and King,” a nod to his status as the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.
In the reverse design element of 10 Francs-4 Florin Austrian Gold Coins, you will find a depiction of the crowned arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The crowned arms of the empire is based upon the seal of the House of Habsburg, a double-headed eagle with a crown on its head, sword in one talon, and a scepter in the other talon. The dual face values are marked on this side of the coin.
10 Francs-4 Florin Austrian Gold Coins are available here in average circulated condition. Coins in this condition are often considered to be in very good condition overall. The coins are housed inside of individual plastic flips.
