In the early 20th century, the United States Mint designed and issued gold peso coins for Cuba. This rollout of Peso denominations included cupro-nickel centavos, silver pesos, and gold pesos, the latter of which included 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20 denominations. Gold pesos in Cuba were short-lived in the early 20th century. The Spanish Peso had dominated currency in Cuba throughout the Spanish Colonial Era on the island, and revolutionaries of the 1890s were the first to try and introduce unique Cuban coins. In 1915 and 1916, the United States Mint designed Cuban Gold Pesos, with Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber completing the work.
