The SS Tilawa’s tragic fate during World War II has drawn comparisons to the Titanic, earning it the nickname the “Indian Titanic.” The ship was on a scheduled voyage from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa, when it was struck by Japanese torpedoes, sinking into the Indian Ocean. Along with the loss of many lives, the wreck took down 2,364 silver bars to the ocean floor. In 2017, a covert salvage mission recovered around 60 tons of the shipwrecked silver, sparking controversy over the operation. Today, 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Silver Rounds are available from JM Bullion.

The SS Tilawa Shipwreck Salvage Silver Series gives collectors and investors a unique chance to own a piece of maritime history. The SS Tilawa, an ocean liner from the British India Steam Navigation Company, met its tragic end on November 23, 1942, when a Japanese submarine torpedoed the vessel in the Indian Ocean. Onboard were 60 tons of silver bullion, lost for decades until the wreck was found in 2014 and the silver was recovered in 2017.
All 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Silver Rounds are available to you with protective plastic flips, tubes of 20, or boxes of 500. These silver rounds feature unique designs honoring the legacy of the S.S. Tilawa shipwreck. More than a piece that commemorates the S.S. Tilawa, these pieces were made from silver recovered from the wreck of the vessel.
On the obverse of S.S. Tilawa Silver Rounds, you’ll find the common design for this shipwreck series. This image shows the S.S. Tilawa underway on its voyage from India to South Africa. The background includes a map that charts the course of the Tilawa from present-day Mumbai to Durban.
The reverse of the 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Silver Round comes with a depiction of the vessel underway. The S.S. Tilawa can be seen in this design from its stern as it sails off into the distance. On what turned out to be the Tilawa’s final voyage, it was carrying silver from Bombay to Durban to be struck into silver currency by the South African Mint.
