Shipwreck silver offers investors and collectors more than just a chance to buy silver bullion. When you have the opportunity to buy silver salvaged from a shipwreck, it is a chance to own a piece of history with a backstory. The S.S. Tilawa is a little-known, tragic backstory of World War II and the silver contents this vessel carried across the Indian Ocean in November 1942 leaped back into the headlines in 2024. After its silver was secretly salvaged from the wreckage in 2017, and its ownership settled in courts, Tilawa Silver is now being refined into commemorative pieces. Today, 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars are available at JM Bullion.

The S.S. Tilawa was a casualty of World War II. The Royal Navy had used the vessel largely as a troop transport in and out of British ports in India. In November 1942, however, the S.S. Tilawa set off on a voyage from Bombay (modern-day Mumbai) to Durban, South Africa. The Tilawa set off with 732 passengers, 222 crew, and 600 tons in cargo. It was also carrying 60 tons of silver in the form of 2,364 silver bars. The Tilawa would, tragically, never reach its port.
All 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars available here come sealed in plastic with boxes available for multiples of 500. These modern bullion bars were made using silver salvaged from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa. Each one bears designs honoring the legacy of the Tilawa, connecting shipwreck silver across more than 80 years of history.
The obverse of 1 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars comes with a stylized, wave-patterned background field. At the center is a small emblem honoring the S.S. Tilawa. The identifying hallmarks of the bar are included on this side.
On the reverse of S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Bars, you will find a depiction of the lost vessel. The Tilawa is shown as viewed from water level looking at the stern of the ship. As it cuts through the water, ripples of clouds fill the sky overhead. The S.S. Tilawa’s original silver payload was destined for the South African Mint to be refined into Egyptian and South African silver denominations. It was recovered from the seafloor in 2017, but prolonged court battles over ownership of the silver persisted through May 2024.
