South African Gold Krugerrands were developed by the Rand Refinery, South African Mint, and the government of the Republic of South Africa in the 1960s as a means of promoting the vast natural gold reserves in South Africa. From 1967 to 1979, the South African Krugerrand stood alone as the only gold bullion coin for sale to private investors.
Its dominance was so solid by 1980 that the South African Mint and Rand Refinery would issue fractional-ounce weights of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. This all came before most other programs even existed. At the time, only the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was in production and that series only offered a 1 oz gold coin to buyers.
Paul Kruger features on the obverse side of 1 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coins. This design was created in the 19th century by Otto Schultz and debuted on the coins of the South African Pound gold denominations. It depicts Paul Kruger in left-profile relief with inscriptions of the nation of issue around his portrait.
A Springbok antelope is depicted in the reverse design of the South African Gold Krugerrand Coin. This design was created by Coert Steynberg and was originally used on various denominations of South African coins starting in the 1940s and continuing into the late 1950s. It shows a Springbok as it pronks along the savannas of southern Africa.
