The Morgan Silver Dollar effigy of Lady Liberty is one of the lasting coin designs from the 19th century that has stuck with modern Americans. The Morgan dollar was introduced in 1878 after a five-year hiatus in American silver dollar production following the end of free silver coining in the US. Today, the Morgan Silver Dollar itself remains a popular collector item and the Morgan Liberty image has been recreated on various precious metal products. The 1 oz SilverTowne Morgan Dollar Copper Round is now available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion with the iconic image.
Round Highlights:
George T. Morgan’s Liberty silver dollar design debuted in 1878 and replaced the Seated Liberty silver dollar design that had been in circulation from 1840 to 1873. The Seated Liberty Dollar was halted with the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873 that also ended the free coining of silver in the United States.
Morgan was a British artist and engraver who had been recommended to the US Mint director by the director of the Royal Mint of England. The latter had no place for him, so Morgan came to the US to be an apprentice at the Philadelphia Mint facility. He designed the left-profile bust of Liberty that featured on what became popularly known as the Morgan Silver Dollar design.
On the obverse of these 1 oz SilverTowne Morgan Dollar Copper Rounds is that left-profile portrait. Anna Willess Williams was the inspiration for Morgan’s vision of Liberty. She is depicted wearing a headband with “Liberty” on it and a wreath crown on her head. “E Pluribus Unum” is inscribed along the top rocker and there are a number of stars along the bottom rocker. The original Morgan Silver Dollar design had 13 stars with a date mark separating seven stars on the left and six stars on the right. These copper rounds place additional stars in the field to balance the design with 16 stars in total.
The reverse of SilverTowne Morgan Dollar Copper Rounds includes a depiction of the American bald eagle. The powerful aerial predator has its wings spread to the maximum width and its talons flexed and ready to capture any prey.
These 1 oz SilverTowne Morgan Dollar Copper Rounds are available in brand-new condition. Individual rounds are available in protective flips, multiples up to 16 are housed in mint tubes, and multiples of 400 are in boxes.
