The attractive Hobo Nickel Silver Round series is coming to an end in 2016, with five total designs released by designer Mr. The and master sculptor Luigi Badia. The final installment comes with direct inspiration from a 2005 US Jefferson nickel special issue coin. Right now, the 1 oz Proof Jefferson Skull Hobo Nickel Silver Round is available from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
Hobo Nickel Silver Rounds were designed by Italian-born designer Paolo Curcio (known as Mr. The), who now calls Spain home. He’s a well-known artist among numismatists, and created all five takes on hobo subculture art in this stunning five-round release. Each design was sculpted for use on the rounds by Italian master sculptor Luigi Badia.
Hobo subculture dates back to the early 18th century, but was most prevalent in the US in the 19th and 20th centuries. These lonesome travelers would pass the time from place to place, and job to job, carving their own “enrichments” onto circulation US coinage.
On the obverse of this final release in the series is Mr. The’s take on the 2005 Westward Journey design for commemorative Jefferson nickels in the US. In place of President Jefferson’s right-profile portrait you’ll find only the right-profile portrait of a skull, with the engravings of “In God We Trust,” “Liberty,” and “2005” just as found on the Jefferson nickel.
The reverse continues with themes reminiscent of the Buffalo Nickel from James Earle Fraser. The design includes the Mini-Man and Train combination created in 2014, with a puff of smoke from the steam train in the background mimicking the appearance of the buffalo’s back hump from the Buffalo Nickels. In the foreground is the familiar hobo, with corncob pipe, hat, and knapsack carrying his Earthly belongings.
These silver rounds are available today with unique edge lettering included in the overall design, which indicates not only the unique serial number for each round, but also its weight, purity, and metal content. Each 1 oz Proof Jefferson Skull Hobo Nickel Silver Round comes with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity and arrives in an Air-Tite protective capsule.
