The Buffalo Nickel was created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser. A native of Winona, Minnesota, Fraser grew up on the plains of the Upper Midwest and his works of art were deeply influenced by the way of life of indigenous people. His Buffalo Nickel design was featured on the five-cent piece from 1913 to 1938.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Proof Domed American Legacy Buffalo Nickel Silver Round is the original right-profile design created by James Earle Fraser. This side of the silver round has impressive depth created by the domed shape of the round on this side and the coining process. You can actually feel the variations in the braided hair of the indigenous leader and the feathers on his head. All rounds have a commemorative date mark from the original release of Buffalo Nickels and the word “Liberty” engraved on this side.
The reverse of the Proof Domed American Legacy Buffalo Nickel Silver Round includes the same design from the obverse in left-profile relief. On this side, the figure’s portrait is sunken into the round and is accompanied by inscriptions of the weight, purity, and metal content. The “OM” mint mark of the Osborne Mint is featured on this side with an “O” over a horizontal line and an “M” below.
