The American Western Skulls Collection from Osborne Mint pays homage to the American West. While the time period of the Wild West was often romanticized, the skeletal depictions of rough characters and outlaws in this collection captures more of the true essence of the day. As the third design in the series, the Gunslinger brings one of the period’s nastier actors to life.
In the Wild West, there was no shortage of men willing to draw their six-shooter to settle a score or keep Johnny Law off their back. The Gunslinger design found on these rounds is inspired by the characters played by Clint Eastwood, one of America’s most iconic Western actors behind only John Wayne.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Proof American Western Skulls Gunslinger Silver Round is the skeletal face of a rough-and-tumble Western Gunslinger. His beat-up hat and the stub of a cigar in his mouth distract from his evil grin and the danger in his eyes. A pair of revolvers cross below the image, as is common in all designs in the series.
The reverse of the Gunslinger Silver Round features the common design of the American Western Skulls Collection. Here you’ll find the fried eagle, a dark riff on the American heraldic eagle. The elements of the national heraldic shield, 13 stars, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace all remain. Rather than a live bird though, here you’ll find the charred skeletal remains of an eagle behind the shield.
