Obverse and reverse design elements on Proof American Platinum Eagles vary based on the year of issue. From 1997 to 2017, the obverse featured a static image of the Statue of Liberty as created by John Mercanti. This was paired with ever-changing designs on the reverse feature government seals or images of the American bald eagle. Since 2018, the reverse has used a static eagle design with ever-changing Liberty issues on the obverse.
American Platinum Eagles were the third version of American Eagles introduced by the United States Mint. The coins are the only annual platinum issue from the mint and come in Proof or BU versions each year. Both versions only offer 1 oz platinum as of the 2009 issue year.
