The American Gold Buffalo coin is unique among the selection of annual-release bullion coins from the United States Mint. First and foremost, it is the purest coin available with a 1 Troy oz content of .9999 pure gold. Additionally, its proof version was the only one among the major bullion programs not to suffer a canceled issue year in 2009 during the Great Recession. In 2009, the crushing demand for gold and silver bullion coins led the United States Mint to put into motion a one-year hiatus for the proof and burnished versions of the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle. The American Gold Buffalo, however, maintained its proof productions that year. That said, the Proof Gold Buffalo had been available in 2008 with three fractional weights that were not offered in 2009, and have not been offered since.
All 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins in this product listing are available to you with a perfect grade from the PCGS or NGC. Coins with a PR/PF 70 grade have full, original mint luster and no signs of detracting flaws on the surface areas.
The coins in this listing have random labels attached to the slab, such as Early Release, First Strike, Deep-Cameo, or Ultra-Cameo. The former two labels refer to the timing of the coin’s arrival from the US Mint for grading, with receipt of the coin required within 30 days of its original release. The latter two labels point to coins with strong, frosted design sets and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
Both sides of the American Gold Buffalo coin emulate the Buffalo Nickel from 1913. On the obverse is James Earle Fraser’s depiction of a Native American. It is said that he used the facial features of three real-life Native leaders to come up with the image.
The reverse of the 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin includes the design of a bison standing on a dirt mound. This was inspired by Black Diamond, an American bison that lived in the Central Park Zoo of New York City during the early 1900s.
