Portho is the first and three figures to feature in the new Three Musketeers Series. A fictional character from the novel The Three Musketeers, written in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas, Porthos is actually based on a historical figure, though as a highly fictionalized one. Porthau was a member of the King’s Musketeers in the Maison du Roi in 17th century France and served as a loose inspiration for the figures in Dumas’ novel.
The obverse side of Porthos Silver Rounds features a depiction of a swashbuckling female figure. Porthos is shown here with a wry smile on her face as she prepares to take on her foes. She has her sword drawn and is ready for the fight. The inscriptions on this side indicate Porthos is The Dandy among the group of musketeers. Porthos is classified as the extrovert among the three, spending his free time enjoying wine and good music.
On the reverse field of 1 oz Porthos Silver Rounds is a common design element that will feature throughout the series. There is a crest in the background behind three female musketeers. The women are shown as silhouettes against the background field and are walking toward the viewer. There are fluer de lis symbols on the edges of the design field, with the identifying hallmarks of the round as well. The motto of the musketeers features on the banner on this side.
