The five-round series known as the Nordic Creatures celebrates some of the most prominent and well-known beasts from Nordic Mythology. Each of the five releases comes with a distinctive obverse design and a shared reverse design used on all silver and copper rounds within the collection. The last of the creatures to join the series was the Great Eagle.
Obverse imagery on the 1 oz Nordic Creatures Great Eagle Silver Rounds focuses on the mighty Great Eagle. In Nordic mythology, the Great Eagle sits at the top of The World Tree where it can look out over the world and watch for signs of danger. Included within the design are a falcon on the eagle’s head and a squirrel on the branches beneath its talons. This hawk, known as Vedfolner sits between the eyes of the Great Eagle and helps improve its vision out over the world. Ratatosk, the squirrel on the branches beneath, is a messenger of sorts who runs the length of the World Tree from its very top where the Great Eagle resides to the very bottom where the dragon known as Nidhogger resides.
Reverse design elements on Nordic Creatures Great Eagle Silver Rounds include the common design of the series. Here, you can see The World Tree in full. According to Norse mythology, this tree connects the nine Norse worlds and has immense roots that grow outward in three directions.
