The Battle of Thermopylae was a three-day clash between roughly 7,000 Greeks and the Persian Army of the Achaemenid Empire, with the latter force numbering some 150,000 men according to modern estimates. Xerxes, leader of the Achaemenid Empire, offered King Leonidas, his 300 elite Spartan soldiers, and the remaining Greek forces, a chance to lay down their arms and live if they let his army pass.
In response to this offer, Leonidas is believed to have said molon labe. The phrase roughly translates into English as come and take them. Rather than besmirch his own honor and sense of pride as a warrior, Leonidas and his 300 Spartans chose to use the terrain to their advantage and fight the Persians for as long as possible to delay their advance and give the rest of Greek time to muster an army.
On the obverse side of 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds, you will find a depiction of Persians and Spartans locked in brutal hand-to-hand combat. The three day fight between the superior numbers of the Persian Army and the elite skills of the Spartan warriors resulted in the death of all 300 Spartans, including Leonidas, and roughly 3,700 other Greeks. The Persians are rumored to have lost some 20,000 men in total.
The reverse field of Molon Labe Silver Rounds comes with a depiction of the mint logo. The Intaglio Mint logo is featured at the center of the field with a background of swirling, radial lines. The outer rim of the design element has all the identifying hallmarks included.
These 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds are available to you with the eighth design of the collection. Each individual round comes with a plastic flip, while multiples of 20 will arrive inside plastic tubes.
